Milagros Torres Uriarte

Milagros Torres Uriarte 87, of Elizabeth, New Jersey died surrounded by her family on February 21, 2020.  Milagros was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico to Cecilia Hernandez and Luis Torres.  When she graduated from High School she migrated to New York and worked to help her mother and three brothers migrate to the U.S. for a better life. She married Emilio Uriarte.  They raised three children: Millie, Emilio and Marcos.

She received a Bachelor’s degree from Queens College and was a pioneer for social change as a grass root community leader in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York.  Among the many organizations she committed her efforts to the Boy Scouts of America, Los Sures and the Seneca Democratic Club.

Milagros is survived by her three children, three brothers: Jose, Agustin and Victor and five grandchildren.  Visitation will be on Sunday February 23, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.  Funeral will be on  Monday February 24 at 9:00am, burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, New Jersey.
